Lucton School has a wonderful indoor swimming pool situated next to the senior boarding house. Through the day, it is used by pupils throughout the school and in the evenings and at the weekend, boraders have many opportunities to use the pool.
All children from Transition to year 8 have the opportunity to swim twice a week throughout the school year as part of their curriculum. All pupils are taught by Swim England qualified swimming teachers and PE teachers with elite swimming backgrounds. School and Club swimming is supported by teachers from the Lucton-Typhoon Swim School. Our pupils make exceptional progress as a result and access all manner of sporting opportunities. From as young as Reception, all pupils experience an Inter-House Competition.
In the Autumn Term, Lucton sends a team to the Midlands ISA Regional Gala’s. Pupils from year 3-13 take part and again, over a third of our pupils compete. We regularly have swimmers who go on represent the Midlands at the National finals and regularly bring back medals. Lucton has many swimmers in the top 3 positions across the disciplines. A remarkable achievement considering are small year groups and the fact that 26+ schools attend!
This year Lucton entered the Herefordshire Primary Schools Gala and swept the board against almost 30 primary schools. This included many individual medals and relays; quite an entrance to this competition!
The swimming programme also plays an important part in the children’s involvement and success in multi-sports. Lucton are currently ISA National Triathlon Boys’ Champions, Midlands Champions in both Aquathlon and Triathlon and Herefordshire Schools Champions in Aquathlon.
Lucton hosts the ISA National Triathlon and has done for the last 5 years. The event attracts nearly 300 competitors from 25 ISA schools from far and wide. Lucton rises to the occasion as the whole school is involved in event planning and running the event. The school community comes together to ensure all visitors to Lucton School have a positive day and leave with fond memories.
The event welcomes British Triathlon Officials, ISA Sports Administrators, a professional timing system provided by Racetime Solutions. National Athletes are attracted to the event and provide the competitors with an aspirational goal. This professional event is again provided free as part of Lucton’s charitable status.
Lucton boasts its own GB Triathlete and Duathlete in Mark Warren, who not only started the Triathlon Club at Lucton as well as being instrumental in the inception of the Ludlow Triathlon Club that trains at Lucton School but also acts as the main race coordinator.
Lucton regularly perform well for both school and club. Results throughout the categories reflect our strength in this fantastic sport.
In the Youth Event, (and this really was an athletes event!) Lucton’s pupils excel. Lorchan Clarke is the ISA National Triathlon Champion and still has another year in this category! Forbes Wilson was 2nd just 9 seconds behind! Aiobh Clarke and Angus finished just out of the medals in 4th place.
In the TS3 category, Malachi Clarke and Harriet Sneyd both had top 10 finishes from 41 competitors. Onto TS2 and more medal success; George Jones gained a silver medal. Theo was 5th, with George Townsend, Ellis and William Wilson all in the top 10 also! Sadly a bike malfunction cost Darcy Clarke a medal, she finished 8th, with Hannah Wilson 9th and Hannah Lawry 10th. Again wonderful results in a category with 57 competitors taking part.
The successes continued with Lucton pupils doing superbly well in the TS1 and TS categories too. Ben McKnight-Hardy gained a silver medal, Livvy McGrath was 6th and Jack Taylor was 8th. Nathan Berry (gold) and William Evans (bronze) both had podium finishes to complete a real team performance for Lucton. Nathan is the ISA National Triathlon Champion alongside Lorchan Clarke, sensational!
Lucton School has hosted this very unique type of event for almost ten years. We are one of a few schools in the Midlands that run this event free for Primary and Secondary Schools in the region. Such is our reputation for high quality and bespoke events like this. Lucton School hosts the ISA Regional Aquathlon too. Lucton are currently the Midlands ISA Schools Champions and have been Herefordshire Schools Champions for the last three years.
Over a third of our school population enter these events annually from Years 3-10. We currently have several gifted and talented athletes who as part of a local Triathlon Club, compete regionally and nationally throughout the year and are regular podium athletes.
Lucton pupils in Years 5,6,7,and 8 are taught Water Polo as part of the swimming programme. The school enters the local Herefordshire Schools Competition and currently we are the reigning champions.
This is a sport which will grow in the region and Lucton will be at the heart of competitive opportunities.
