In the summer term, at ten past four on a Tuesday afternoon the rounders pitches at Lucton came alive as the majority of girls from Year 9 to 11 were joined by a competitive and enthusiastic group of Sixth Formers. The beauty of this much maligned game is that it is easy to learn and can be a sport that demands quick, agile thought and movement, whether in the field or trying to score a rounder. This was definitely the case with the Sixth Form, whose bowler, back stop, first post combination of Ellie Painter Black, Chelsey Grimes and Lucy Jones, often proved too strong, claiming many victims, before they had hardly left the batting square. With consistent, strong hitting by the entire team and excellent deep fielding by Megan Griffiths, they scored two convincing victories against Ludlow College.
The progress made by every member of the Year 11 team was impressive and although they didn't manage to dominate as significantly as their senior counterparts, there was significant improvement with batting, speed around the posts, decision making and fielding strategies. Ching Mei, Izzy Farkas, Yazmin Jennings, Grace Ralph and Maddie Lewis often impressed with the bat as did Millie Bufton, who frequently took some inspired catches. A positive team spirit meant that newcomers to the sport; Arina, Louisa, Ann and Caitlin were encouraged to take part, often excelling with the bat and in the field.
