I would like to extend a warm welcome to you from all of us here at Lucton Prep School.

A website is unable to convey the actuality; nevertheless, I hope that these pages tell you that what matters most to us is the well-being of your child.

This starts in our EYFS setting and, in particular, in our Nursery, where our enthusiastic staff ensure those first precious learning experiences are fun-filled and memorable.

The children then move on through Pre Prep (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) into Prep (Years 3, 4 and 5) before transferring to the Middle School.

Years 1 and 2 – Pre Prep

2nd Pre Prep class outsideAs the children progress in Years 1 and 2, our children build upon the skills and experiences they have encountered during their EYFS years in Nursery and Reception. The learning is still based in a largely social atmosphere but greater formality is gradually introduced.

By the end of Year 2, our aim is that children will have grown in self-confidence and be happy to be a full member of the school community. We offer an all-round education in Years 1 and 2 and the extensive curriculum, including swimming in our own pool and involvement in our Forest School, encourages the children to become independent and responsible, preparing them for life in Years 3, 4 and 5.

Years 3, 4 & 5 - Prep

Year 3 represents a change in focus for the children. More specialist teaching is introduced and they are expected to be more independent in their outlook as well as being more responsible for themselves and their own belongings.

By the time they reach Year 5 they will be joining in the Senior Assembly and be expected to be the role models for the rest of the Prep School. Our small classes enable the children to succeed at their own rate with high expectations from the teachers. Art, drama, music and sport (especially swimming in our own pool) play a very important part in the life of a child in the Prep School.

We try to ensure that all Prep children can play for the school in representative team sports. They are strongly encouraged to sing in the Junior Choir and, in Year 5, are given the opportunity to have free lessons in either the cello or the violin, which imbues the virtues of patience and discipline and further builds their confidence.

The development of self-confidence and the ability to speak and perform in public are important. To this end, each year the Prep School puts on a major dramatic or musical production giving opportunities to every child to develop expertise and confidence on stage in front of a large audience.

Throughout their time in the Prep School, the children also participate in our Forest School; further building their confidence, and trust in their peers.

Assessment, Recording and Reporting

One of the principal benefits of Lucton School lies in small class sizes. This enables teachers to really target the learning of each individual child. At the end of the autumn term, class teachers hold their first parents’ evening; this is followed with a report at the end of the term.

During the spring term specialist subject teachers will be at the parents’ evenings. Finally, the summer term finishes with a school report on the whole year.
